Dust is generated in high temperature processes, such as incineration plants, power plants and within the metallurgical industry. The amount of dust generated, chemical and mineralogical composition of the dust as well as physical properties will largely depend on the process generating the dust but also on the off gas system used. The main objectives of this study were to obtain knowledge about properties of dust from primary copper smelters and to study the possibilities of controlling the separation of such dust in the gas cleaning system. A controlled dust separation whereby formed dust would be selectively collected in different fractions suitable for recirculation, treatment in special processes or for deposition would enhance the possibilities for recovering metal values and minimise the amount of dust deposited. A basic knowledge about the properties of formed dust have been obtained and the possibilities to obtain a controlled dust separation is discussed in this thesis.
