An extensive set of high, vertical cliffs is present on the South flank of Big Mountain, Ventura County, California. The main topographic expression is a line of cliffs four miles long, ranging in height from one hundred to five hundred feet. Cliffs greater than thirty feet in height occur locally over an area of thirty square miles. The Big Mountain cliffs are unique in Southern California. The Santa Susana Mountains, of which Big Mountain is a part, have gentle to moderate slopes (up to 40 degrees), with the cliffs standing out in marked contrast. They comprise the most extensive set of non-faulted, non-marine,sedimentary cliffs in Southern California. [See more in text.]
