Speckled leaf blotch of oats is caused by an imperfect fungus, Septoria avenae Frank. The perfect form, Leptosphaeria avenaria Weber, is an ascomycete rarely found in nature and consequently of secondary importance. The disease has received different names as "Speckled leaf blotch", "Septoria leaf spot" and "Leptosphaeria leaf spot". In France "nuile" is the most common name. In 1941, the Quebec Society for the Protection of Plants named it "tache septorienne des feuilles". The english common name "speckled leaf blotch" has been assigned to it by the Common Names Committee of the Canadian Phytopathological Society. The latter name was used by Weber (1922). [...]
