Lung cancer among the Jewish and non-Jewish of Montreal, Quebec, 1956-1966: mortality rates, and cigarette smoking behaviour

The study attempts to describe and account for the overall lung cancer mortality pattern, by ethnic group and religion, of the City of Montreal from 1956 to 1966. Lung cancer mortality appeared high for Jewish females relative to her non-Jewish equals and low for Jewish males compared with non-Jewish males. The Jewish male and female lung cancer cases had lower proportions of “epidermoid or anaplastic” cell types comprising their total pathologies, higher proportions of nonsmokers, and they consumed fewer cigarettes, on the average, than did their non-Jewish counterparts.
