This paper shall consist of two parts, each having two sections. This first part shall be concerned with Inertial Navigation (IN) and the equipment to do the mathematical computation needed for solving the problem of position, course, and system biasing. No attempt shall be made in this part of the paper to design hardware or to select an actual system. There are a great variety of IN systems for both commercial and military application on the market. Only when one is able to tailor a system to a particular need with knowledge of the type of vessel, its use, and the ability of the owner to finance the project, can one select actual hardware. Part one, therefore, shall be a review of IN and computer systems available and a discussion of statistical filtering. (See more in text.)
