Presently, the German Navy Airwings lacks the automated computer, infrastructure required to process administrative flying specific data in the squadrons and administer data from deployed aircrew's on foreign airfields. Thus, flying data are obsolete quickly, especially if aircrews are deployed, and administering personnel must create the forms. Owing to this inefficiency, delays of several days can occur. In this thesis, a prototype of a database and a client server application was designed and developed showing the feasibility of implementing a system that transfers data quickly and securely over long distance and can store the data accordingly. With several technologies available to create and implement such a system, the goal was to employ currently available components efficiently and economically. Thus, three tier client server implementations are introduced and compared, where the RMI network protocol best provides a robust and efficient answer for the required needs. Java RMI enables the software developer to create distributed Java to Java applications in which the methods of remote Java objects can be invoked from objects in other Java Virtual Machines (JVM). RMI can be programmed to provide services to a database by establishing a listener process to handle access requests. RMI uses the built-in Java security mechanisms, making the computer system safe when code is downloaded. Every RMI based system is portable to any JVM. The system incorporates the JDBC(Trademark) to establish a connection to a database.
