This thesis analyses the working and living conditions in a Gabonese logging camp and the transformations that the forestry sector is undergoing according to sustainable development. It is based on an ethnography carried out between 2011 and 2015 in the timber branch of a multinational company, in the region of Makokou (Ogooué-Ivindo) and in Libreville. Crossing the fields of political anthropology, anthropology of work and environmental anthropology, the chapters present a professional context resulting from a colonial and post-colonial history and a singular political economy. The forest work world is described through the lens of its hierarchical relationships, issues of value and recognition, and environmental and religious considerations. The investigation also focused on the stakes related to forest governance and the transformation of the rural world in order to put the idea of sustainability in Gabon into perspective. The thesis is divided into two tomes: the first is a dissertation and the second is made up of the main papers published during the doctoral period.
