Ron Rash et Craig Johnson sont deux auteurs américains contemporains qui touchent les lecteurs en raison des thèmes sociétaux abordés, des stéréotypes qu’ils renversent et du profond ancrage régional de leurs romans. Leur description de l’altérité repose sur plusieurs ressorts littéraires dont le travail sur le stéréotype culturel et linguistique, ainsi que sur le sociolecte. L’objectif de ce travail est d’étudier les difficultés liées à la traduction du stéréotype langagier, du stéréotype socioculturel et du sociolecte qui caractérisent les personnages. Comment transférer des stéréotypes linguistiques ou même un sociolecte, qui par définition, n’existent pas dans la langue-culture cible ? De manière générale, l’appareil théorique de cette étude s’appuie sur une approche socioculturelle ainsi que la stylistique comparée, l’anthropologie et la linguistique. La première partie s’attardera sur la présentation du contexte éditorial, la présentation des écrivains et des traductrices, notamment leur habitus. La deuxième partie étudiera la poétique du stéréotype et plus précisément la traduction des expressions idiomatiques et autres marqueurs de stéréotypie. La troisième partie portera sur la traduction de stéréotypes socioculturels portant sur les Indiens et les habitants des Appalaches. Enfin, la quatrième et dernière partie étudiera la traduction des sociolectes. L’objectif est d’analyser et de comparer les choix de traduction et de dégager les éventuelles stratégies de traduction mises en œuvre et de s’interroger sur le rôle du traducteur et sur la fonction de la traduction dans l’espace littéraire mondial, c’est-à-dire son contexte politique, économique et culturel. Craig Johnson and Ron Rash are two contemporary American writers praised for their universal appeal conveyed by the societal themes they cover, the manner in which they challenge stereotypes of the West and Appalachia and their unfailing attachment to the landscape. The authors convey alterity through the interplay between cultural and linguistic stereotypes that characterize the inhabitants of these remote regions. The objective of this study is to examine the difficulties related to the translation of linguistic and sociocultural stereotypes as well as the translation of the sociolects. Indeed, how does one transfer linguistic and cultural stereotypes or even a sociolect that, by definition, do not exist in the target language and culture? Generally speaking, this study will draw on the theoretical framework of the sociocultural approach, comparative stylistics, anthropology and linguistics. The first part of this study will present the publishing context, the writers and the three translators’ habitus. The second part will examine the poetics of stereotypes and more specifically, the translation of idiomatic expressions and other markers of stereotypes.
