Abstract

The relationship between theory and practice in teacher training is one of the most frequently discussed aspects in the context of university teacher training. In biology didactics, teaching and learning laboratories have been established as learning opportunities in order to ensure that theory and practical experience dovetail in teacher training courses. In this research project, the question was examined how student biology teachers perceive and use teaching and learning laboratories as a learning opportunity in teacher training. For this purpose, group discussions were conducted and were evaluated using grounded theory. The core category includes the central phenomenon learning to teach by "(not) teaching". This describes the insight that students often do not see their actions in the teaching and learning laboratory as teaching as in school contexts, but nevertheless experience typical teaching situations in the teaching and learning laboratory.
