Abstract: The purpose of this research is to contribute to studies on agricultural land use in the vicinity of cities (including periurban areas) and its relationship with the consumer market in the region. In order to do so, we took as a case study the specialization developed in the municipalities neighbouring the municipality of Florianópolis, with a view to meeting the growing food demand of the entire conurbation area, which includes parts of four municipalities (São José, Biguaçu, Palhoça and Santo Amaro). da Empress), in addition to the capital. The historical trajectory, which began around the beginning of the 20th century, promoted the expansion of a horticultural green belt, forming the current geography of food production in Greater Florianópolis. Taking as a starting point classical theoretical references on land rent (Thünen, Ricardo and Marx), trying to understand the current spatial dynamics of the supply of vegetables for consumption in cities. In view of this need for food production, we sought to understand the reasons for the permanence of the green belt and, at the same time, understand the strategies of local farmers. Our study identified three main factors responsible for maintaining this configuration and dynamics: the perishability of cultivated foods, production flexibility and the role of demand in the constitution of a regional market, elements that highlight the importance of proximity in supply.
