Abstract

This thesis is a novel examination of how genes can interact with alcohol use and problematic drinking behaviours to impact mental health outcomes via genomic activity. Genomic analyses were conducted with health and biological data of Vietnam veterans. This work uniquely demonstrates problematic drinking behaviours as environmental stressors that affect veteran health. This thesis validates known drinking-related genomic markers and shows the differential activity of novel genes from dependent drinking. Overall, this work aids in understanding the biological pathogenesis of alcohol use disorder and comorbid mental health issues in at-risk populations.
