Qualitative research that aimed to analyze the training of health professionals in the Family Health Strategy in mental health, with an emphasis on the use of crack, alcohol and other drugs, in Brazilian regions. Semi-structured individual interviews were carried out with 111 participants: community health agents, nursing assistants/technicians, ESF coordinators and managers. The organization of the material used the technique of Collective Subject Discourse (CSD) and the analysis of social representations. The results showed the health conditions and the importance of health promotion activities, preventive and curative practices aimed at users of crack, alcohol and other drugs in the community, social demands that justify the need for the existence of Mental Health in Primary Care, knowledge from the local population about the services offered by the Psychosocial Care Centers (CAPS) and their role in the community, in addition to providing a detailed perception of health professionals about training in this subject and the feelings of the participants in relation to the analyzed context. It was considered that it is urgent and necessary to expand mental health training strategies in primary care, as well as to strengthen matrix support, in order to enhance the actions of promotion, prevention and harm reduction in the community, as well as to train professionals in conducting the necessary care for this population, especially for community health agents, technicians and nursing assistants, in partnership with other primary care professionals.
