Abstract
One of the main problems of constructive approximation concerns investigation of the possible rates of approximation of a function by polynomials. We study a specific family of polynomials, called "near-best", and extend the results known for this type of approximants. We discuss the construction of "near-best" polynomials for piecewise analytic functions defined on quasi-smooth arcs, as well as for harmonic functions defined on some compact sets in the complex plane.
