Microstructural design of phononic crystals and metamaterials using topology optimisation

This thesis has reported some topology optimisation algorithms for systematically designing three-dimensional phononic crystals and acoustic metamaterials with various desirable functionalities, such as vibration/sound isolation, acoustic focusing and holography. Based on the developed methodology, various optimised phononic microstructures and metamaterials have been successfully created and verified by experiments. These structures can be easily fabricated with the help of rapidly developing 3D-printing techniques. The research achievements have shown many potential values in fundamental research and practical applications.
