Abstract

This is a combined research, analysis, and English-language translation project of excerpts from Stefano Benni's collection of short stories, Il bar sotto il mare (The Bar Under the Sea). I chose these 8 stories for the variety of challenges they present to the translator. Concluding notes describe many of the choices I made based on the functionalist theory of translation, research on the philosophies of famous Italian-English translators, and my own interpretation of the material.
