At the crossroads of the sociology of memory and the sociology of collective action, this dissertation analyses the different ways in which the past is evoked and how people engage with or through memory. By focusing on nubian memorial constructions in post-independence Egypt, I investigate how relationships to the past and to community fluctuate in a changing political context. This thesis demonstrates that the evocation of the past and its images goes beyond lament (rithâ’) and shows that there are various forms of “memory work”. The associations (gam‘iyât) founded in the cities since the twentieth century, on the one hand, and the activists on the other, but also the youth groups interested in heritage, are different actors who put the nubian past at the heart of their practices. This study explores several notions from arabic, french and english scholarships, contributing to understand the processes of identity formation, politicization and depoliticization, and the definition and formulation of logics of memorial actions. It examines the ways in which memorial constructions unfold in a national, but also international framework. Based on an ethnographic fieldwork in Egypt, this thesis studies the modalities of action of a diversity of actors (associations, activists and non-activist youth groups) and the meanings they attribute to their commitment.
