Abstract

This PhD thesis focuses on the sociopragmatic study of the phenomena of linguistic impoliteness, hate speech and identity construction in online conflicts on the topic of three hate crimes. Users of the online platform YouTube comment in the respective discussion areas expressing their public positions regarding the crimes against Vangelis Yiakoumakis, Zak Kostopoulos, and Eleni Topaloudi. The aim of this research is to provide a comprehensive understanding of these phenomena and their interaction in online environments. Based on the tools of sociopragmatics, we analyse with qualitative methods the data collected on the three crimes in terms of the phenomena of impoliteness, hate speech, identities, and conflicts. We reveal how these interact to ultimately lead to the formation of the interactions under consideration. A very important role in this is played by the context within which the interactions unfold, i.e., the commentary on the three hate crimes with the characteristics that each of them bears. Based on the results of the study, it was found that linguistic impoliteness was realized by the speakers towards their interlocutors in the interaction, while hate speech was directed towards both the victims and perpetrators of the crimes. This distinction led us to a classification of the realizations of hate speech: in the first case, the strategies of justifying or underestimating the crime and insulting the memory of the dead victim were identified. In the second case we distinguished hate speech into incitement to violence or hatred and dehumanization. Both linguistic phenomena, namely linguistic impoliteness and hate speech, functioned as means for constructing the identities of (a) the commentators involved in the interaction and (b) the victims and perpetrators of the crimes. The mismatch identified between the commentators due to the different values they espoused, the different identities they claimed and the linguistic strategies they enacted led many of the online interactions to develop into conflicts of values.
